Empowering Victims of Domestic Abuse.

Ruth’s House, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, is a safe place for victims of domestic violence. We fulfill our mission by:

  • assisting in the interruption of the cycle of family violence and abuse

  • educating the community about the problems of family violence and everything it involves

  • providing family members engaged in domestic violence with non-violent alternatives for dealing with the problem

  • providing shelter and services for the victims of family violence.

Our History

On April 18, 2011, a group of pastors gathered in Washington, NC, to discern how they could unite to make a positive difference in our city. After gathering input from different members of the community, they agreed that the most pressing need in Beaufort County was a domestic violence shelter. We are acutely aware that North Carolina is in the Top 10 states for domestic violence in the US and that there have been domestic violence-related murders in our own county.

We resolved that our guiding principles include being an organization that was strongly tied into — and supported by — the community. We agreed to begin as a small, efficient, scrupulous non-profit that would serve Beaufort County.

In August 2011, we filed our Articles of Incorporation with the state of North Carolina and pressed ahead with our internal structure and developing a business plan.

In February 2013, our dream became a reality and Ruth’s House opened the doors of a safe haven. This comfortable home provides a shelter where women and their children can find peace while they begin to rebuild their lives. Surrounded by the latest in high-tech security, Ruth’s House offers a safe refuge for the victims of domestic violence.

We are committed to being good stewards of our donors’ dollars and work diligently to see that every contribution is used appropriately and produces maximum results.
